The classic roadster the Alfa Romeo Spider was produced between the years of 1966 and 1993. In the year 1994, 190 cars were further produced in a commemorative edition for the North American market. The Alfa Romeo Spider is recognized as an international design classic. It effectively remained in continuous production throughout the course of three decades with only minor changes in aesthetics and mechanics during that time.
The car was based on the Giulia 105 series chassis. It was first launched in the year 1966 at the Geneva Motor Show. At its launch, it did not yet have a name, but in a write in contest in Italy, it was given the name Duetto. Pininfarina designed the body of the car. It was the final project that the founder of that firm, Battista “Pinin” Farina, was involved with. Pininfarina is credited with creating the monocoque construction of the vehicle.
In the year 1993, a limited edition commemorative edition of the Spider was produced for the United States and Canada market. There were a total of 190 of these automobiles that were imported to North America, each of which had a small plaque affixed to its dashboard to identify which number it was.
