The German car manufacturer BMW produces a luxury crossover SUV known as the BMW X3. This vehicle is based on the BMW 3 Series platform. In the year 2005, the BMW X3 was awarded the Best New Sport Utility Vehicle award at the Canadian Car of the Year awards.

Thanks to the success of the BMW X5, BMW came to the conclusion early on in the decade that it would like to compete with other small luxury SUVs such as the Lexus RX330. At this point, the BMW X3 was created.

When the X3 was first unveiled in the year 2003, it was announced by BMW that they would be using a new four wheel drive system as a means of power it as well as its bigger brother, the BMW X5.

The BMW X3 has been the subject of some criticism owing to its harsh ride. Critics also have derided its austere interior, which relies mainly on plastic components. It is also not a very practical vehicle for off road usage. For these reasons, critics have argued that the car is a bit overpriced. In the year 2005, BMW sought to meet these complaints by adding various upgrades to the vehicle.
