Known in the United States of America under its colloquial name Chevy, Chevrolet refers to a brand of cars
that is made by the General Motors Corporation. It is the best selling marque offered by General Motors, and the most famous General Motors automobile around the world. Often times, Chevrolet is thought of as synonymous with the GM name. Over twenty different Chevrolet cars are currently offered on the market, with numerous enhanced versions available domestically. Chevrolet vehicles range from medium duty commercial trucks to subcompact cars. Some of the best selling Chevrolets in the United States of America include the Impala and the Silverado truck.
The roots of Chevrolet go back to the early half of the 20th century, when Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant founded it. Chevrolet had been a racecar driver, born in the year 1878 in Switzerland. Durant, who founded General Motors, had been forced out of that company in the year 1910 and became interested in using Chevrolet’s designs as a means for rebuilding his reputation in the car industry. Before founding General Motors, Durant had hired Chevrolet as head of Buick to drive those cars in promotional races.
In late 1911, Chevrolet introduced its first car to compete with the Model T Ford. The Classic Six was then introduced. It was a five passenger touring sedan with a six cylinder Configuration that could drive the car up to sixty five miles per hour.
In the year 1913, Chevrolet came up with its famous “bowtie” logo. It is said to have been designed from wall paper that Durant once saw in a hotel room in France. Some have argued that the design is borrowed from the Swiss cross, after Louis Chevrolet’s native country. By the early sixties, one out of every ten cars purchased in the United States was a Chevrolet.
