The Chevrolet Silverado is a full size pickup truck available from the General Motors Company. It is available alongside the GMC Sierra.
Since the year 2006, the Silverado has been the second best selling motor vehicle in the United States of America, right behind the Ford F Series pickup truck. In combination with the platform made GMC Sierra, the platform typically outsells the Ford F Series. The Ford F Series is made of two completely different platforms for its standard and heavy duty models, not counting derivatives of the SUV like the Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe, and Yukon. So far in the year 2007, over three hundred ten thousand Silverados have been sold in the United States. About three hundred fifty thousand Ford F Series were sold during the same period. Combined with a sale of nearly one hundred thousand GMC Sierras, General Motors pickups have outsold their Ford rivals.
While General Motors may have introduced its first pickup truck in the year 1930, the term Silverado was not employed until the mid 70s. GMC’s C/K also used the Sierra as a higher level trim designation on its vehicles until the late 80s. At that point, GMC decided to use the name “Sierra” on all its pickup trucks.
