General Motors released the Chevrolet Tahoe alongside the GMC Yukon as a full size SUV. Originally, Chevrolet and GMC named their SUV models the Blazer and the Jimmy, respectively. When GMC rebadged the Jimmy as the Yukon, then Chevrolet soon followed suite, renaming the Blazer as the new Tahoe after releasing a mid size SUV known as the S10 Blazer.

The GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe are now the only two full size SUVs belonging to the General Motors Corporation. Both come in lengthened wheelbase editions; this version of the Tahoe is known as the Suburban.

In the year 1998, a luxury Denali model also joined the Yukon line up. Then, in 2002, a Denali version of the Yukon XL known as the Yukon XL Denali was made available.

In the United States of America and Canada, the Chevrolet Tahoe is often used as a police car, particularly in rural areas, where it is viewed as a nice alternative to the Ford Crown Victoria.

In the year 1992, a new GMC Yukon was introduced. At that time, Chevrolet continued to maintain their version as the Blazer. Up to 1994, all the models had two doors. Then, in the year 1995, a four door version was introduced and the name of the Blazer was changed to the Tahoe.
