French auto stalwarts Citroen are responsible for the creation of the supermini vehicle known as the Citroen AX. The Citroen AX was made between the years of 1986 and 1998.

The Citroen AX was first unveiled in the year 1986 at the Paris Motor Show. It was meant to serve as a replacement vehicle for the Citroen Visa. The Citroen AX was available upon its launch as a hatchback with three doors boasting 1.0, 1.1, and 1.4 liter Configurations. Shortly after its first appearance, a 1.4 diesel model and five door version of the car were introduced. Pretty soon, the 1.4 diesel Configuration was replaced by a 1.5 liter unit. The Citroen AX came with fully independent long travel suspension. A famous television campaign sprang up in promotion of the Citroen AX featuring Janet Mas and an elderly Chinese gentleman known simply as Mr. Wong. The TV commercial was filmed in China.

The Citroen AX was noted for being incredibly economical, thanks to its quality aerodynamics and light weight (weighing in at around 650 kg in its basic version.) This was also thanks to the extensive utilization of plastic panels in non load bearing areas on the vehicle.
