The large family vehicle known as the Citroen Xantia was made by French auto stalwarts Citroen between the years of 1993 and 2001. In its eight years of existence, the Citroen Xantia sold over a million units. In the first half of 2001, production on the Citroen Xantia came to a halt. For another five years, however, the vehicles continued to be produced in Iran by the SAIPA Corporation.
The Citroen Xantia was meant as a replacement vehicle to the Citroen BX. The Xantia maintained a high level of popularity, continuing on from its enormously prolific predecessor.
Critics feel that Citroen had learned its lesson from the reception given to the rather staid Citroen ZX vehicle, which had been introduced a couple years prior and criticized for its lack of flair in design and Configurationering. The Citroen Xantia was Citroen’s attempts to address such concerns in a more conventionally good looking format.
While the Citroen Xantia did not boast such a dramatically styled exterior as the Citroen BX, it was nevertheless way more distinctive than such contemporaries as the Opel Vectra and the Ford Mondeo.
The Citroen Xantia made use of Citroen’s traditional hydropneumatic suspension system, which had initially been pioneered in the DS.
