The Italian car manufacturer Fiat has been producing a supermini known as the Fiat Punto since the year 1993. The Fiat Punto is currently in its third generation.
Named Project 176 internally, the Fiat Punto was first announced in the year 1993 and released the following year as a replacement vehicle for the Fiat Uno. In the year 1995, the Fiat Punto was named the European Car of the Year. The vehicle features distinctive clean cut styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro; for this reason, the Fiat Punto was an instant hit upon its initial release. The Fiat Punto also became a big hit on the marketplace thanks to its competitive prices, which undercut competitors the Volkswagen Polo and the Opel Corsa.
The second generation of the Fiat Punto, known as the Nuova Punto, was launched in the year 1999. The New Punto received new styling, while retaining the original shape and design of the first Punto. The interior and chassis, however, received a complete facelift. The new Punto would also be the first Fiat vehicle in several years to come with the original round Fiat badge. This was done as a celebration of Fiat’s centenary.
In the year 2003, the five millionth production Fiat Punto was released.
