The compact crossover SUV known as the Land Rover Freelander is sold by the Ford subsidiary known as Land Rover. Currently, the Land Rover Freelander is in its second generation. In the United States of America and Canada, the Land Rover Freelander is sold as the LR2.
The Land Rover Freelander was completely designed by the Rover Group, despite early interest in a collaboration with BMW which resulted in a decline of interest on the German side of negotiations. Despite this fact, the BMW company would go on to secretly manufacture their own vehicle, which came to be known as the BMW X3. This vehicle first came off the production line in the second half of 1997. The Land Rover Freelander would go on to become the best selling compact 4 x 4 on the European continent, even outselling the BMW X3, as well as numerous other off road vehicles.
The Land Rover Freelander comes in a variety of different models based on the three door softback and the five door station wagon. There are also commercial versions of the vehicle, as well as a hardback version.
The second generation of Land Rover Freelanders was unveiled in the year 2006 at the British International Motor Show.
