Automotive giants Mazda are to debut a lighter version of their legendary Mazda MX-5 car at the Frankfurt motor show which is next month. The Mazda MX-5 Superlight is a car which represents 20 years of successful, simple, soft top design whilst still being practical and affordable. The light weight version has had all non-necessities removed and has been left with the bare essentials in order to shed weight.
As you can see from the image below, the Superlight is a roofless two seat vehicle, which features a radical, aerodynamic chassis to aid acceleration and handling, although not featuring a roof does not make this a very good every day vehicle.
From a power perspective, the engine details have not yet been revealed, however you can guarantee that the Superlight will be much faster than a conventional MX-5, especially considering the body and mechanical parts have been made from various, light weight materials.

Despite the expected high performance output thanks to the lightweight construction of the Superlight, you can expect a reasonable MPG. Mazda are keen to stress that due to the vehicles weight, emissions are much lower than an equivalent sports car.
